Depression is on a continuum, mild to severe. We have all experienced sadness and it makes more sense when we can identify the cause: a death of a loved one, divorce, loss of job or a break up.
Through time and stress management we can bounce back and lead a “normal” productive life. However, with Major Depression you can’t always pin point the cause of why you feel so awful. The biological symptoms of low energy, increased sleep - almost puts you in a vegetative state. Making even the simplest decisions exhausting. On the cognitive level the brain can be tricky, sending you negative thoughts: you are worthless, why bother trying, nobody likes you, you are a loser and you can’t do it anyway so why bother.
You no longer have the ability to find enjoyment or excitement about anything.
People who don’t understand this disorder are always offering their unsolicited opinions of what they think is wrong with you “you are lazy, you just don’t want it bad enough or you expect everyone to do it for you, you are ungrateful.”
